9月27日Journal club主题预告

Journal club is coming back! In this JC, we invite Li Hao, from Guo Aike's lab, Wang Kaiyu, from Wang Zuoren's lab and Mu Yu, from Du Jiulin's lab, who will bring  interesting topics. Below is the brief introduction about their topics in this JC!

  Topic 1: Memory(李昊)

When I was a middle school student, I suffered a minor brain injury, developed anterograde amnesia, which erased three hours of memory from my life. I was very astonished when friends told me that I behaved in an entirely normal way during those three hours. I have been wondering about what happened to my brain ever since. For example:

  1. Does my memory loss reflect impaired storage or impaired retrieval?

  2. Why is it that a presumably localized damage (most likely of the medial temporal lobe) results in global amnesia of all the experiences in those three hours?

  3. What was my world like in those three hours and what if I never recover?

Many years later I learned that such sad cases indeed exist, H. M. being the most famous of them. Please join us if you are interested in problems along these lines or have other stories to share.

Topic 2: Integration of sensory-motor (穆宇)

I'm Yu from Jiulin Du's zebrafish lab.

One fundamental function of the animal brain is to handle external stimuli and internal drive, and make decisions to generate the proper behaviors.  Taking advantage of the simplicity, accessibility, and robustness of zebrafish behavior, our lab attempt to perform some detailed study of the neuronal circuitry underlying the behavior.

It's quite interesting to me to study the sensory-motor integration: measuring the sensory responses, observing the animal behaviors, generating various hypotheses, and testing them.  In this coming JC, based on the literature and our studies, I would like to introduce two aspects, which help us to study sensory-motor system and get further understanding of the brain function:

  1. choice of behavior

  2. multisensory interaction

Topic 3: olfactory system of Drosophila (王开宇)

I am a 6 year student in Zuoren's Drosophila lab. Our lab focuses on the sensory system (esp. olfactory system) of animals, and the methods frequently used by us include genetics, electrical-recording/imaging, and behavioral assays. During the past ~5 years, fruitfly and I got along with each other very well and we together carried out various experiment of several different projects.

In the coming JC, I would like to share my opinions and some relative knowledge about the olfactory system of Drosophila with you. Considering the limited time, i will first focus on two main points:

  1. What is known about the (insect, esp. Drosophila) olfactory system (I will try my best to give a draft);

  2. Briefly introduce two papers (links below) about insect olfaction (which are not very related with my own projects but really fascinating).

Hope we have happy discussions this thursday and in the future. And thank JC provides me with the opportunity to be one of the speakers.

Then, JC will follow this skeleton:

19:00~19:05   A few words of welcome and an introduce of JC

19:05~19:30  Speakers introduce their interesting, projects and topics to us briefly, respectively

  19:30~20:30  Discussion in groups

Place and time: ION building 430 at 19:00 on Thursday, 29, September
